Abstract

Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a highly prevalent neoplasia in males, commonly associated with urinary symptoms that compromise the quality of life of men. This study aims to compare the surgical response of the endovascular treatment of embolization of the prostatic artery with surgical resection of the prostate. The analysis is based on a systematic review of articles between January 2012 and January 2020. The results showed that embolization was shown to be beneficial in reducing urinary symptoms, improving quality of life, reducing prostate volume, improving urinary flow and reducing the post-voiding residual volume in the medium term. Despite the benefits of the endovascular technique, we found that surgical resection remains the gold standard technique for treatment.
